Thruxton hosted round 6 of the BRSCC Fiesta Junior Championship, and the Wera Alliance Duo of Alfie Garford and Jenson Mason were eager to get back in the driving seat after the impressive performance at Silverstone.
The pair were straight on it setting good times in testing ready for the Saturday morning qualifying session.
Qualifying came, and with it a damp track. Not a problem. A fantastic lap from Jenson early on put him at the top of the times, and later in the session Alfie would pop into 3rd position. As the time ran out, no one could improve and so Jenson would take POLE with Alfie directly behind on the grid in 3rd.
Race 1 and lights out. Garford made a lightning start and moved up to 2nd place. So as like Silverstone it would be a Wera Alliance 1-2 through-out the race but this time with Mason out in front… But they would also narrowly miss out on that 1-2 over the line as before. Garford fell to 3rd by the end of the race but well clear of the field.
Jenson would be under pressure from an eager 2nd place driver wanting to get past for the win, but nerves of steel and fantastic car positioning kept them at bay. Lap after lap Jenson needed to protect his position, near moves and ideas were tried by second place man, but Jenson had it covered. Round the final corner and the pit crew hanging over the wall to see Jenson, fist in the air and roars from the stand to take the flag and 1st place! So another team 1-3 and looking very good for the final 2 races….
Sunday made host for race 2 and 3. The boys lined up in 1st and 3rd again. Jenson made another great start holding on to 1st and pulling away slightly. Alfie however had pressure from behind and so was on the defensive, unfortunately losing touch with the lead 4. Again Jenson showed no mercy and contained the lead in tremendous style under the pressure from others behind. All race he had to protect the lead, and sure enough he did just that. 2nd win of the weekend the boy was on top top form!! Garford however had a tough time with competitors not sticking to the track limits and found himself taken advantage of throughout the race and fell back to a disappointing 6th, but sure it would come back his way post-race with penalty’s. And sure enough after penalty’s Garford rose up the order to another 3rd place for race 2.
The final race of the day and the weather decided to spice things up. On the start Garford had an issue out of the 1st corner and got swamped by the mid field, pulling him down to outside the top 10! Mason Had a superb start from 6th on the outside and got himself back into the podium positions. But….. 4 laps in and the weather decided to come in, the rain beating down on the track and going through the flat out corners at 110mph the boys had their work cut out. Garford was on the rise and had been picking of drivers one by one and found himself chasing down the lead pack! Jenson who was in the lead pack all race had been having fantastic battles all race. With 3 laps to go the duo looked good, and both looking to mount a challenge for the win!!
Disaster! Jenson’s car had break failure! Trying to miss other competitors in front he diverted of track and hit the Armco, and out of the race! Jenson would be ok but the car was a mess. This left Garford the only one left to snatch the win after the drive of his life through the field. Last lap and a slingshot down the back straight found Garford 3 abreast for the lead going into the final corner. But a yellow flag halted Garford’s momentum. He would cross the line 2nd but jubilant with his outstanding drive.
Pete Osborne Alliance Team Principal said after the race ‘It was Jenson’s turn this time and he did it in style, what a win!! Mega Well done to him! The 2 lads have been exceptional in the later part of the season, between them they are now dominating this series. The improvements both of them have made in and out of the driving seat has been really good to see, and they are evolving into a couple of bloody good racing drivers! I’m really happy for them both.
An ecstatic Jenson said after race 1. ‘I’m so glad to get the win. I kept my cool and just knew the pace was there in me and the car. I made sure I positioned the car well so I could cover any attack from behind. No-one was having it of me! The team have done a marvellous job all year and it’s paying off with a win a piece with us both in the last 2 races.
