WERA ALLIANCE RACE REPORT – CROFT CIRCUIT
MINI CHALLENGE TROPHY – ROUND 4

The Wera Alliance team made the long haul north to Croft Circuit for Round 4 of the MINI Challenge Trophy – a fast, technical layout with tight chicanes and high-speed sections that always delivers drama. With regular driver Jenson Mason unavailable for the weekend, the team called upon one of their JCW talents, Cameron Richardson, to jump into the Trophy car alongside championship contender Alfie Garford.

Cam, no stranger to the Trophy class from previous seasons, brought both speed and experience to the team. The chemistry in the garage was immediate, with both drivers working closely through Friday testing to dial in a setup that would hold up across Croft’s demanding mix of corners and curbs. From the outset, it was clear the team had two seriously fast cars beneath them.

FRONT ROW FIRE – QUALIFYING ROUND-UP

Saturday’s qualifying session saw the Wera Alliance duo make a real statement of intent. Both drivers hit the track early to put in banker laps, and the pace was immediately strong. As the session progressed, Garford found clean air and delivered a storming lap to secure P2 on the grid, locking out the front row. Richardson, jumping back into the Trophy spec after time in the JCW car, looked right at home and managed a superb P5 – making it two cars inside the top five and setting up a thrilling race day ahead.

RACE 1 – LIGHTNING STARTS & PODIUM FIGHTBACK

The opening race kicked off on Saturday afternoon under blue skies. When the lights went out, both Wera drivers reacted instantly. Cam launched off the line, leaping from fifth to second in a single lap, while Garford settled into third with a smart and clean start.

The front group quickly broke away, and for several laps it was a tightly contested three-way battle for the lead. Cam and Alfie swapped places through Sector 1, both pushing hard but giving each other room. However, Cam’s strong run came undone midway through the race when he was hit from behind entering Tower Bend. The contact sent him wide, and the damage caused a power issue that severely hampered performance. He dropped down the order as a result, eventually crossing the line in P14.

Garford, meanwhile, found himself defending third from a growing train of cars behind. Under relentless pressure, he delivered a smart and composed drive to bring the car home in P3, banking another podium for the season and vital championship points.

RACE 2 – RED FLAGS, REPAIRS & WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN

Sunday morning brought Race 2, and with it another opportunity to climb the order. Cam lined up P14, still carrying some uncertainty around the car’s earlier power issues, while Alfie started P7.

Both drivers got away well, but it was soon clear Richardson’s issue had returned. Despite a strong start, he was unable to make real progress and was forced to head to the pits, where the team worked quickly to diagnose and repair the problem. He rejoined, but a lap down and out of contention.

Garford, on the other hand, got his elbows out and charged forward with strong, confident moves. He worked his way up to P4 before a red flag neutralised the race. After a full restart, Alfie found himself back in the thick of it – but in the final laps, as the field bunched up through the Jim Clark Esses into the final complex, he was tagged from behind and spun, dropping him out of the points and down to P16. A cruel end to what was shaping up to be another solid result.

RACE 3 – PODIUM PRESSURE & CAM’S COMEBACK

Determined to end the weekend on a high, the Wera Alliance crew worked tirelessly between races to fully repair both cars and get them back to peak performance. With confidence restored, Garford lined up P2 and Richardson P5 for the final showdown of the weekend.

The opening lap was frantic – both drivers lost a couple of positions in the early scrap as the field jostled for position. But from there, the recovery began. Cam dug deep and produced one of his best drives of the weekend. Smart, smooth, and assertive, he worked his way back through the field, picking off cars one by one and ultimately finishing in a hard-earned P5 – a clear sign of what might have been without Saturday’s incident.

Garford, meanwhile, settled into P3 and spent the entire race locked in a tense battle for second. He pushed lap after lap, looking for a way through, while fending off pressure from fourth and fifth. It was a masterclass in racecraft and composure, and he brought the car home for another podium, his second of the weekend.

With those results, Alfie climbs another spot in the overall championship standings – momentum firmly in his corner as the season reaches its midpoint.

TEAM PRINCIPAL PETE OSBORNE ON CROFT WEEKEND

“I was really impressed with both drivers this weekend. Alfie showed real maturity and race craft under pressure – bringing home two podiums in a competitive field is no easy feat. He continues to grow stronger with every round and keeps delivering when it counts.

Cam stepped in late, straight from JCWs, and adapted brilliantly. His qualifying was excellent, and even with the issues in race one and two, he dug deep and fought back in race three with a drive full of grit and experience. He’s a real asset, and it was great to see him back in a Trophy car.

We know the team behind the scenes is strong, but performances like that from the drivers are what really bring it all together. I’m proud of what we’ve built – and weekends like this make all the hard work worthwhile.”

DRIVER REACTIONS

Cameron Richardson:
“Great to be back in a Trophy car! Qualy was strong, and race three was a proper fight back through the field. Gutted about race one – I really think I could’ve joined Alf on the podium if not for the contact. Big thanks to the team for getting the car sorted.”

Alfie Garford:
“Solid points and two podiums – happy with that. Having Cam in the garage was a big help. His experience really helped across the weekend, especially in getting the car dialled in during testing. We’ll build on this for the next one.”

NEXT UP – DONINGTON PARK UNDER THE TOCA SPOTLIGHT

The Wera Alliance MINI Challenge Trophy team now look ahead to Donington Park at the end of August, where the championship rejoins the prestigious TOCA package alongside the BTCC. With big crowds, national coverage, and an electric atmosphere, it’s a key round in the season.

Murray Richardson will return to the second Wera car alongside Garford, as the team aims to carry this momentum into one of the showpiece weekends of the year.
